Dear members of OR.NET association
Even though it has become a bit quieter during the Corona period, we at OR.NET association have not been idle. The number of industry partners dealing with SDC is steadily increasing, which is also reflected in the growing number of industry partners at the Plug-a-thons. These are organized in close cooperation with the working groups “Standardization”, “IEEE 11073 SDC Software Tools”, “software stacks” and “Industry”. Here, tools and software libraries for the implementation of SDC are further developed and evaluated. For example, several tools now exist to facilitate the testing of SDC participants. Work continues publishing or making them available to association members. The OR.NET VPN continues to be a success story. On the one hand, it enabled the decentralized plug-a-thons in times of pandemic and on the other hand, it is available to the association members as a permanent infrastructure.
The working group Software Stacks has always been involved in SDC.
The SDC software stack SDCLib/C, which is maintained and publicly available by SurgiTAIX AG, is frequently used in research projects. Recently, SDC has gained enormous momentum and enjoys growing popularity across industries, so a new decision was made: The development of a new IEC 62304 compliant C++ SDC stack is now focused, the development of sdcX – eXtensible. Since each manufacturer has developed and evolved individual requirements for SDC and the associated software over time, the stack was developed from scratch with a completely modular approach. SurgiTAIX AG was able to draw on many years of experience in the medical technology sector and SDC to create a product that meets the diverse requirements of manufacturers.
Our WG Clinic also contributes a lot of clinical knowledge, expertise and experience to research with one hand, e.g., within the Acute.Care Innovation.Hub (UKA), while bringing SDC to the clinics with the other hand. Through user surveys, such as the one conducted by Unity, which can be found here: https://www.unity.de/fileadmin/Branchen/Medizintechnik/Development-of-Medical-Devices/The-Real-Value-of-Medical-Device-Interoperability-in-Hospitals.pdf , and conducting further SDC user studies, we also incorporate user requirements into SDC. Besides the (further) development of a tablet application for telesupervision of several operating rooms, we also support cross-clinic research projects. For example, OR.NET association is an associated partner in the project “SmartHospital.NRW Development of a smart model for the transformation of hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia by means of innovative use cases based on artificial intelligence in medicine”.
At the beginning of November, our OR.NET strategy meeting took place, where the members of the association had the opportunity to actively participate in the strategic management of the association, and to let their opinions and competences flow into the work of the association. In four 90-minute sessions, topics regarding SDC processes and governance, the SDC family of standards, SDC approval strategies and the role of OR.NET association were first addressed by short expert presentations and then discussed among the interested members. In these sessions, in a very appropriate and well-organized setting, an open exchange of ideas and possibilities but also of possible concerns and criticism could be conducted. In addition to comprehensive feedback on the strategic direction of the association, the results also include various working groups, which deal in more detail with sub-areas that would have exceeded the thematic and, above all, time frame of the meeting. At this point we would like to thank all participants.
After we were unfortunately denied trade fair appearances due to corona, we are now looking forward to DMEA 2022, where OR.NET association will be showcase again and will have an impressive trade fair appearance with a 85m² booth. A special feature of our booth at the upcoming DMEA will be our industrial area, where we will present new industrial projects together with various partners. In addition to the normal trade show operations, we will also have our spring symposium at DMEA 2022. Interesting speakers are already lined up for the symposium, and planning for the social-event part of the event is already in full swing.
As a more short-term event, a session at HEALTH 4.0 (https://www.mcc-seminare.de/mcc_veranstaltung/health-4-0/ ) on Dec. 14, 2021, with presentations and panel discussion, in which OR.NET association will be represented, is scheduled.
Finally, we would like to welcome our new members to the association:
